Staff writers David La Vaque and Jim Paulsen bring private disagreements public about key high school football games

prep picks

The pickers are back for another season. Staff writers David LaVaque and Jim Paulsen bring private disagreements public about key high school football games each week. They won’t disagree all the time, but enough to keep score of who’s better at predicting outcomes.

WAYZATA AT ROSEMOUNT, 7 p.m.

Jim says: How can I pick against a 2012 Class 6A semifinalist in its home opener? When the Irish face another semifinalist, that’s how. Wayzata brings a reputation for fast, aggressive defense. And word is the Trojans have simplified their passing game.

Pick: Wayzata 21, Rosemount 7

David says: Both teams run well. Both will mix in high-percentage passes. Both are likely bound for state. The difference: Wayzata is more stout up front on both sides of the ball.

Pick: Wayzata 24, Rosemount 14

MAHTOMEDI AT SPRING LAKE PARK, 7 p.m.

Jim says: Spring Lake Park’s identity is a bit different this year. The lines, typically a strength, are a question mark. What cannot be questioned is the talent of RB/LB Ejodamen Ejiya, a physical specimen who looks born to play football.

Pick: Spring Lake Park 26, Mahtomedi 19

David says: Ejiya and his Zephyrs’ counterpart, Jackson Hull, make this a showcase for strong running backs. Along with having a stud carrying the ball, Mahtomedi boasts them up front, too. Postseason seeding is on the line, and the team with the better offensive line wins.

Pick: Mahtomedi 21, Spring Lake Park 20

CHAMPLIN PARK AT ANDOVER, 7 p.m.

Jim says: The last time Champlin Park beat Andover was 2008. The drought ends Friday. The Rebels will bring their usual rough-and-tumble ways and have enough defense returning to frustrate Andover QB Connor Wilkie.

Pick: Champlin Park 20, Andover 14

David says: Champlin Park talked this week about its seniors avenging a 70-0 loss to Andover two years ago when the schools’ sophomore teams played. The Rebels have emotion on their side, but Andover holds the talent edge.

Pick: Andover 28, Champlin Park 21
