First Report

St. Michael-Albertville overcame an early three-touchdown deficit and rallied to knock off visiting Centennial 38-35 in Class 6A second-round playoff action Friday night.

Jarrett Bennett ran for four touchdowns, including the game-winner with one minutes, 36 seconds remaining. He then sealed the victory with an interception on No. 3 seed Centennial’s final heave to help the No. 2 seed Knights advance into the final round of eight.

St. Michael-Albertville (6-4) began the game with a nine-play scoring drive capped off by Bennett’s 32-yard touchdown run, but Centennial (5-5) responded with four straight touchdowns to take a comfortable 28-7 lead until just before halftime. The Knights scored with just six second left in the second quarter to set the stage for a comeback.

Bennett scored his second touchdown with 7:41 left in the third, and it led to a string of three straight scores in the period, and the Knights’ first lead since the opening minutes.

Centennial would mark its only score of the second half when Lance Nielsen, Jr. broke off a 36-yard touchdown run with 8:33 to play, reclaiming the lead for the Cougars that would prove short-lived. With 1:36 left, Bennett converted from three yards out, and the Knights’ defense held for the team’s second win of the season over Centennial.

St. Michael-Albertville advances to Thursday’s Class 6A quarterfinal meeting Thursday at Park Center High School in Brooklyn Park, where they will face No. 4 seed Wayzata.
