Staff writer Jim Paulsen offers up his metro top 10 in advance of the first full weekend of the 2021 high school football season, and it has a familiar look.
1. Lakeville South: The Cougars lost some big names to graduation but have plenty coming back.
2. Eden Prairie: Lots of inexperience on offense, but does anyone seriously think the Eagles aren’t going to be among the metro’s best?
3. St. Michael-Albertville: Veteran offensive line could make RB Max Keefer the breakout player of the year.
4. Wayzata: The Trojans boast a big senior class with plenty of playmakers.
5. Rosemount: The Irish have a real weapon in star kicker Leyton Simmering, a difference-maker.
6. Shakopee: A program on the rise with a veteran offensive line to pave the way.
7. Maple Grove: A deep and sound defensive core should keep the Crimson in every game and allow the offense to gain experience.
8. Lakeville North: Coach Brian Vossen’s stated goal is to “get back to being Lakeville North.” Meaning: tough, relentless, never-give-an-inch football.
9. East Ridge: There is some serious talent on the defensive side of the ball.
10. Elk River (5A): Coach Steve Hamilton believes this team is as deep and talented as any he’s had.
