Top performer winner

Alex Berreth, Farmington. The junior quarterback threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter — the second a 50-yard connection to wide receiver Eli Green — to start the Tigers’ scoring in a 41-14 win against Stillwater. Berreth threw three touchdowns in the second half and finished the game with 262 passing yards on 16 completions.

Top performer candidates

Luke Bendickson, Braham. The running back opened his senior season with a 25-carry game in the Bombers’ 24-21 win against Pine City. Bendickson rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns and had a 37-yard TD reception. The Bombers attempted two-point conversions on each of their three touchdowns, with Bendickson converting all on runs.

Josh Buri, Stewartville. Buri, who led the Tigers with just over 1,000 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns last season, is well on his way to breaking those totals this year after guiding the Tigers to a 44-36 win over Triton. The junior running back scored five touchdowns, accumulating 33 carries and 362 rushing yards. Four of his TDs were in the first quarter alone, giving the Tigers an early lead they kept through the rest of the game.

Jack Foster, Mankato West. The senior quarterback led the Scarlets to a 49-14 victory over Rochester John Marshall by completing 13 of 21 pass attempts. Foster tallied 235 passing yards and four touchdowns, two of which were 59 or more yards. Foster added 77 rushing yards on five carries, including a 30-yard run for a touchdown, to amass 312 total yards.

Kade Lozinski, Minneota. The sophomore quarterback had an impressive season debut performance, completing nine passes for 265 yards — an average of nearly 30 yards per completion — and four touchdowns. Three of his TDs were 51 yards or more yards, including an 81-yard completion to Alex Salter early in the second quarter. Lozinski scored a fifth touchdown on a 1-yard carry to help the Vikings rout Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 50-7.

Ryan Miles, Richfield. The junior quarterback led the Spartans to their first win in 20 games with an all-around impressive outing. Miles completed 14 passes for 162 yards and three touchdowns. He added 117 yards and two touchdowns on the ground – highlighted by an 81-yard scoring scamper. Miles also successfully completed two passes on two-point conversions and ran for another as the Spartans defeated St. Croix Lutheran 49-34 in a seesaw affair.

Jackson Nibbelink, Winona. The senior quarterback accounted for a career-high five touchdowns in propelling the Winhawks to a 33-7 victory over Albert Lea. He threw three touchdowns to go with 180 pass yards and added two touchdowns while collecting 24 yards on the ground. Nibbelink's scoring came in the first half, allowing the Winhawks to build a 33-0 lead before the Tigers found the end zone in the third quarter — their only points of the game.

Wyatt Olson, St. Peter. In the Saints’ season-opening 41-0 win over Sibley East, the senior quarterback threw for a career-high five touchdowns and finished with 255 passing yards — an amount he surpassed just once in eight regular-season games last year. Olson connected with four different receivers on the five touchdowns.

Cade Sheehan, Rochester Mayo. The senior quarterback picked up where he left off last season with another spectacular passing performance. After finishing last year’s regular season averaging 169.1 passing yards, Sheehan piled up 231 passing yards and three TDs to send the Spartans past Northfield 48-15

Derek Turner, Breck. The senior running back surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark in a regular-season game for the first time in his career, and he did it in a big way — finishing with 215 yards and a career-high four touchdowns on just 15 carries. He had two TD runs of more than 50 yards, and also returned a kick for 54 yards in the Mustangs’ 43-6 win over Minneapolis South.
