Six TD passes and nearly 400 yards passing? Not a bad opener

• BECKER 42, BUFFALO 33: Tommy Benson threw six touchdown passes — four to Joel Hopkins — as Becker out-gunned Buffalo in the season-opener for both teams. Benson completed 24 of 33 passes for 388 yards. Colton Haight had three rushing scores for Buffalo.

• ST. THOMAS ACADEMY 42, SIMLEY 0: The Cadets are once again expected to be among the top teams in Class 4A. They showed it with a convincing victory Friday over Simley. STA racked up 347 total yards of offense and led 28-0 at halftime. Quarterback John Gould was efficient in the passing game, going 10-for-12 for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

SUBURBAN EAST
• FOREST LAKE 53, PARK OF COTTAGE GROVE 36: In a game that must have left both defensive coordinators cringing, Forest Lake toppled Park of Cottage Grove behind 195 rushing yards from J.T. Jurasin. The Rangers’ Tommy Tyson returned both a kick-off and an interception for a touchdown as Forest Lake raced out to a 46-30 halftime lead. Dylan Smallidge had three touchdowns for Park.

TRI-METRO
• ST. AGNES 36, ST. PAUL ACADEMY 21: A pair of juniors did the damage for St. Agnes. Akayla Porter carried six times for 59 yards and three touchdowns while Josh Johnson, jr, RB, rushed 18 times for 117 yards and two TDs, paving the way for a victory over St. Paul Academy.

• ST. ANTHONY 34, BLAKE 19: Talk about starting a season in style and announcing one’s presence with authority. Senior David Shadduck took the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, jump-starting the Huskies.

• BRECK 19, NEW LIFE ACADEMY 18: Senior quarterback Austin Lommen completed 21-35 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns, helping Breck edge New Life Academy. The two teams missed a combined five point-after opportunities. Kasey Robinson had 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns for Breck.

MINNESOTA
• WATERVILLE-ELYSIAN-MORRISTOWN 39, JORDAN 0: It didn’t matter which team was throwing the ball. W-E-M junior Brady Ayers was going to catch it and find the end zone. Ayers had three receiving touchdowns and added another score on an interception return in the shutout victory.

• SIBLEY EAST 26, GIBBON-FAIRFAX-WINTHROP 7: Logan Reid rushed for a whopping 303 yards on 21 carries, pacing Sibley East in the victory. The senior captain scored three touchdowns.

• HOLY FAMILY 29, WATERTOWN-MAYER 12: It’s a new season with plenty of new players for budding Class 3A power Holy Family. But thanks to senior quarterback Michael Roane, it was a familiar result. He played a role in every score for the Fire — throwing for 3 touchdowns and running in the other touchdown. He added three extra-points.
