Minneapolis Roosevelt has cut its 2011 varsity schedule because of a low number of exerienced players, according to a news release from Minneapolis Public Schools sent out last week.
"The safety of our student athletes is a top priority," the release states.
A low number of returning football players raised safety concerns for a varsity schedule. Athletes would be required to play both offense and defense. Instead, the school will allow students in grades 9-12 to participate on the junior varsity squad.
According to the release, Roosevelt didn't lose any players based on the decision. The school will re-evaluate its football program in the offseason to determine if a varsity squad will return in 2012.
