Academy Football Wins Homecoming

By Unknown 09/27/2013, 9:00pm CDT

With the largest crowd in recent history, Academy Football doesn't disappoint.

Historic Lang Field - 27Sep2013

With one of the largest crowds in recent memory in attendance, the Academy Football Spartans took care of some long overdo business and the West Lutheran Warriors in one fell swoop. It's no secret that the football team at St. Paul Academy and Summit School has struggled of late, even with the cooperative agreements with Mounds Park Academy, Twin Cities Academy, and Great River School in place. But in recent weeks, this often overlooked football program has shown signs of life.

Against a resilient West Lutheran team, our boys took the lead early and never looked back. The score at the end of the first quarter was 14-0, and that was as close at the game would get for the remainder of the afternoon. Michael O'Shea scored on a ten-yard run to open the scoring, and before too long Dalante Peyton added a sensational seventy-five yard punt return for a touchdown. Nick Hoffmann added extra point kicks after each score. On the first play from scrimmage in the second quarter, O'Shea and Peyton combined their efforts on a beautiful fifteen-yard touchdown pass to the back corner of the endzone. Louie Bogolub scored the final Spartan points on a five-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

The win marks the second on the season, and the third under second-year head coach Ed Perrault. More importantly, it was the first homecoming victory for the football team in several years. Perrault said "The boys picked a great time to finally put together a whole game of Spartan football. It's always nice to win a football game at home, but to get the first homecoming win in a while makes it that much sweeter. As a coaching staff, we knew they were capable of it, but it sure feels nice to see all the hard work start to pay off." It's not certain whether Perrault meant the hard work of the coaching staff or the players, but it is a certainty that he's hoping that the rolling tide of momentum stays with the Spartans as they take on the Minnehaha Academy Redhawks next Saturday. The game will be Minnehaha's homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm on Saturday, October 5.
