Naughtin's 3rd-quarter TDs break open 14-point win

Jack Naughtin scored on a 36-yard run and returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, breaking open a seven-point game and giving Benilde-St. Margaret’s a three-touchdown cushion en route to a season-opening 48-34 win at Robbinsdale Cooper.

Naughtin's touchdown run capped a six-play, 76-yard drive on the Red Knights’ first possession of the second half and gave them a 34-20 lead.

After the teams traded possessions, the Hawks moved from their own 30 to the BSM 13 in six plays before Naughtin stepped in front of a Brennan Macon pass at the goal line and dashed up the left sideline to for his second touchdown.

The Red Knights jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the game’s first two minutes, 23 seconds as Javon Snelson scampered 49 yards for a touchdown on the game’s third play from scrimmage.

Paul Graupner's ensuing kickoff was a popup which John Backes recoved at the Cooper 42 and four plays Isaiah Gray scored on a nine-yard run.

The Hawks immediately cut into that lead when Billy Kellogg, on Cooper's first offensive play, ran 61 yards for a touchdown.

BSM responded with a touchdown as the game opened with touchdowns on the first four possessions of the contest. An 11-play, 63-yard saw the Red Knights convert on a pair of third-and-long situations, the second time with Gray hooking up with Joe Sutton for a six-yard TD pass play.

After seeing four touchdowns in the game’s first 7:29, the contest slowed down as three consecutive possessions ended without points, with the team's trading away fumbles.

Cooper's fumble set BSM up at the Hawks' 34-yard line and, four plays later, with 6:28 to play in the half, Snelson scored from five yards out to give the visitors a 21-point lead.

Cooper responded by putting together a 10-play, 80-yard drive, capped by Leroy Taylor's 16-yard pass from Briceon Scott and, after forcing the Red Knights to go three and out, Taylor's 32-yard punt return gave the Hawks' the ball on BSM's 33 and, with 0.7 seconds remaining in the half, Scott found Mark Gerding in the end zone for a 15-yard TD play and Brennan Macon hit Taj Rich with the conversion pass to send the teams into the locker room with BSM leading, 27-20.

The Red Knights would eventually take a 28-point lead following Naughtin's two touchdowns and a Sam Mogensen 16-yard, giving BSM a 48-20 lead with 9:44 to play in the game.

The Hawks got back into the game with a pair of late scores. Ashanti Payner scored on a four-yard run and added a two-point conversion with 5:32 to play in the game and Macon hit Khayvon Hawkins with a 19-yard scoring pass to pull Cooper to within 48-34 with 2:22 remaining.

In all, Cooper held a 391-302 advantage in total offense but a 195-84 advantage in return yards for the Red Knights offset that advantage.

Dom Burg led BSM’s rushing attack with 94 yards on just seven carries as the Red Knights had a 228-176 advantage in rushing. Gray completed seven of 12 passes for 74 yards with one TD and no interceptions. Sutton caught three of those passes for 40 yards.

Conlan Gillespie also had five tackles, including two sacks, and Bryce Puhl added five tackles as well.
