Fresh off back-to-back shutouts in their last two games, Holy Family nearly pitched another with a 32-7 victory over previously unbeaten Dassel-Cokato in Victoria.

The Chargers (6-1, 4-1), ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, came into the game Friday averaging more than 400 yards of offense. But they were held to just 135 total yards and seven first downs by the Fire.

Holy Family coach Tim Tripplet said Dassel-Cokato has “some talented weapons on offense, and our coaches and players came up with a plan to corral them. It was nothing fancy, really. Just play your gap and play with speed.”

Quarterback Jacob Zay led Holy Family’s balanced-attack offense, which totaled more than 450 yards on the night, to a 14-0 halftime lead. His 2-yard touchdown run at 1:44 in the second quarter followed a 6-yard rushing touchdown by Brendan O’Connor on Holy Family’s first possession of the game.

“We really wanted to win this game knowing they were a top team,” said Zay, who finished with more than 230 yards passing.

Holy Family (5-2, 3-2 in conference) added to its lead in the third quarter when Zay completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ryan Bowlin to make it 20-0 with 6:48 left. The pair connected for another score late in the fourth quarter.

Dassel-Cokato scored its only points in the third quarter when quarterback Paul Raisanen threw a 17-yard touchdown to Collin Krick with 3:08 left.
