Marcus Berg was expected to be a main cog in Blake's offensive attack this season, but Berg's offensive output has been startling.

The 5-8 junior running back ran through the Breck defense for 304 yards and four touchdowns in Wednesday's 42-24 victory over the Mustangs.

It was his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season and the second time in the past three games that he has had more than 200 yards, having run for 220 yards and five touchdowns in a 55-14 rout of St. Paul Academy on Oct. 5.

Going into Tuesday's Section 6, Class 4A first-round game at St. Anthony, Berg had carried the ball 135 times for 1,221 yards and 15 touchdowns.

A true team victory

Minnetonka has been No. 1 in the Class 2A girls' swimming and diving rankings for much of the season.

The Skippers proved they are worthy of that ranking with a convincing victory at the Class 2A True Team state meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota.

It was Minnetonka's first True Team victory.

The Skippers had three first-place finishes -- Amelia Schilling won the 200 freestyle along with the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams -- three second-place finishes and 16 other finishes in the top 10.

West metro teams in general showed well. Wayzata was second, Eden Prairie fourth. Edina fifth and Maple Grove seventh.

Islanders unto themselves

DeLaSalle has been ranked No. 1 in the Class 4A state football polls all season.

The undefeated Islanders started a bit slow but have been nearly flawless since a come-from-behind 35-28 victory at St. Croix Lutheran in the third week of the season.

In the five games since then, DeLaSalle has scored at least 51 points in each game, twice topping 60.

The average score of those five victories? 59-7.

Spartans surge

After a 21-20 loss to Delano on Sept. 28, the Orono football team was 2-3 and faced with another mid-range seeding in the Section 5, 4A playoffs.

The Spartans have been playing their best football of the season since, however, ripping off three consecutive victories, outscoring opponents 102-14.

The surge paid off as Orono slipped past Delano to earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in section playoffs. Becker is the No. 1 seed.
