City coach escapes with rural home life

JASON GONZALEZ/Star Tribune - Minneapolis South coach Lenny Sedlock exits a coop after locking up the family chickens. Sedlock and his wife Carol live on six acres of land in Cambridge.

Fifty miles north of the city and up a dirt road, Lenny Sedlock finds peace.

"This is my heaven," he said raising his arms and walking through his backyard of six acres in Cambridge.

Running alongside the 52-year-old Sedlock is his biggest fan, 3-year-old grandson Davian Miller. Together, they search the coop and barn for family chickens that spent the early October Sunday afternoon roaming freely.

Son-in-law David Miller pokes at his family's farm-like upbringing that included Sedlock's three children raising a horse, sheep, dog, chickens and a garden full of vegetables.

The environment is just the opposite of Sedlock's other life as South High School football coach.

Outside of the frayed Minneapolis South hoodie Sedlock wore, football didn't have a place here. The rural oasis, the coach admitted, is a place to rejuvenate.

"We enjoy the city, but love our quiet," Sedlock's wife, Carol, said. "He loves his chickens."

It wasn't always this way. The coach is a product of the city and South High School graduate.

After playing college football at Northwestern, he began his coaching journey that included stops at Henry-Sibley, Southwest and Breck before returning home to South.

His father, 90-year-old Lenny Sr., is also a South graduate and still lives a few miles from the city school.

These deep roots and a unique appreciate for the city pulled Sedlock back to South in 2000.

"A lot of who I am is from [South]. A lot of my values were instilled at South. People want to go back and give where they received.

"I knew it'd be hard, but didn't know how hard it'd be. To change the culture over there, is very difficult."
