Hastings, which hasn't had a winning season since 2005, was at the .500 mark through its first six games this year. A big reason has been the play of linebacker and captain Zach Mellick.

The best movie I've seen in the last year? "Taken 2."

Three songs I never skip on my iPod are ... "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line; "Bring'em Out" by T.I.; "What You Know" by T.I.

Who do you like to follow the most on Twitter, and why? Ellis Williams. He's an inspirational athlete.

How did you get started playing the sports you play now in high school? I played them as a little kid.

At my first varsity practice, I felt ... like Rudy [from a movie about Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who had dreams of playing college football at Notre Dame but faced many obstacles].

What is your favorite meal before a game? Chicken alfredo.

What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete? Beating Cretin-Derham Hall [34-33 in overtime] at Todd Field in Hastings this football season.

What were your goals entering the 2012-2013 school year? To maintain good grades and excel in athletics.

How do you balance school and sports during the year? Focus on school first, then athletics.

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? Alabama. They are winners.

In 10 years, I hope I'm ... succeeding in athletics.

Best sports advice you ever received? "You sometimes don't get a second chance."
