Defensive battle between Class 4A stalwarts turns on gritty second-half play

In a defense-dominated battle between Class 4A heavyweights, it was fitting that a gritty 3-yard carry by Glencoe-Silver Lake junior Dalton Clouse was the play that turned the game around against Becker.

Seventh-ranked Glencoe-Silver Lake trailed by seven points midway through the third quarter as it lined up to punt on fourth-and-2 from its own 44. The Panthers snapped the ball directly to Clouse, and the 200-pound fullback lumbered up the middle for the first down.

Quarterback Keaton Anderson ran 54 yards for a touchdown on the next play for the Panthers’ first points. The Panthers controlled the game from there, and pulled away for a 21-9 upset of No. 4-ranked Becker in Glencoe.

“That fake punt was huge for us, and (the coaches) didn’t even call it,” Panthers coach Scott Tschimperle said. “We had a senior in the huddle who said, 'Let’s go for it.’ He’s lucky it worked out, but that’s the confidence we want from our senior leadership.”

Anderson finished with 91 yards rushing and scored all three Glencoe-Silver Lake touchdowns, while the Panthers defense held the Becker offense in check much of the night.

Becker’s Tommy Benson came into the night with more than 1,200 yards passing through five games. He finished 9-for-16 for 81 yards and a touchdown.

“Our defense was incredible tonight, just incredible,” Tschimperle said.

Benson drove the Bulldogs 80 yards on the first possession of the third quarter, hitting Joel Hopkins on an 8-yard fade to the back of the end zone. But Becker wouldn’t get inside the red zone again.

The Panthers (5-1) took the lead when Anderson threw an 11-yard scoring strike to Reed Dunbar. Anderson scored on a 1-yard run that sealed the victory late in the fourth quarter.
