Taste of the good life

Visit to Washburn a reminder the city conference can impress

JASON GONZALEZ/Star Tribune - South High School Lenny Sedlock goes over plays with quarterback Anthony Hockett during Friday's 33-6 loss at Washburn.

New turf under his feet and lights beginning to hum above him, Lenny Sedlock couldn't help himself.

"You would think they are the 6A school," the South High coach said. "They have the numbers and they have the facility. Who wouldn't want to play here."

Minneapolis Washburn has been a constant annoyance in Sedlock's life since he took over at South. It got worse Friday night when he watched his players fawn over the rival city school's new playing surface on which they were eventually badly beaten, 33-6.

The Millers are everything the Tigers hope to be in Sedlock's vision for the program.
For Washburn, it's just the opposite. After the game, coach Giovan Jenkins reminded his players South is not a measuring stick. Though the Tigers wear the 6A affiliation badge, the 11-time defending City Conference champion Millers aren't worried about losing their long-standing presence at the top of the league.

South remains hopeful that this will change. Freshman running back Payton Bowdry is convinced he and his teammates aren't far from beating a team like Washburn. Though nearly half of his 17 carries were stuffed for negative yardage, he found a way to stay positive.

"I made a promise to the my team, that even if we lose, I'm going to run hard," Bowdry said while holding his ribs following the loss. "It's only the second game. I don't think we are going to lose another game."

The bold prediction will be written off by most, but not Sedlock. This faith is what the coach is searching for to rebuild. He needs the players to buy into the change before administration and funders will do the same.

This week's matchup:

Minneapolis North (1-1) at Minneapolis South (1-1), Friday, 3:30 p.m. (Homecoming)
Last year's result: South won 30-0
Noteworthy: This will be South's final Friday afternoon game of the season. The Oct. 12 home game vs. Edison will be played under portable lights.
