Minneapolis Washburn relies on its secondary to win easily on the road

In a shutout victory, Minneapolis Washburn prevailed over Minneapolis Edison 43 to nothing at Minneapolis Edison High School in Minneapolis on Thursday. Minneapolis Washburn chalked up 9 points to jump in to the lead in the first quarter. Minneapolis Washburn added 20 points in the second quarter and held on to its lead. Halftime saw Minneapolis Washburn on top 29 to 0. Minneapolis Edison's fate was sealed. In the third quarter Minneapolis Washburn scored 7 unanswered points to keep in the lead. Minneapolis Washburn scored 7 points in the fourth quarter adding to the margin of victory and winning the game.

In the first quarter, Minneapolis Washburn made it happen on the ground when Morley Mathewson rushed ahead 4 yards over the goal line. This solidified the win for Minneapolis Washburn. Afterwards, Minneapolis Washburn's Noah Scarver scored two points with a safety. In the second quarter, piling on, Raymonte Maynard took the ball downfield 75 yards going the distance for a touchdown. Continuing the roll, Minneapolis Washburn's Maynard once again took the ball downfield 58 yards going all the way for a another TD. Later on, Ty Holden scored a 45 yard touchdown for Minneapolis Washburn on a punt return. In the third quarter, after that, Minneapolis Washburn's Derek Schleicher returned an interception for a 32 yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter, airing out the defense, Morley Mathewson threw a 62 yard pass to Jamison Whiting for a score.

The Minneapolis Washburn offense led the way in passing and rushing. Making a superb effort, Raymonte Maynard ran for 149 yards on 6 carries. Maynard got over the goal line twice. Morley Mathewson got 65 yards on 2 completions out of 7 passes attempted. Mathewson also threw an interception. In receiving, Jamison Whiting picked up two receptions for 62 yards and had one touchdown grab.

Minneapolis Edison's offense came up short.

The Minneapolis Washburn defense contributed to the victory, and kept the pressure up with 9 sacks. They forced one fumble and recovered one fumble. They picked off Minneapolis Edison twice returning one for a touchdown.

This was the season opener for both Minneapolis Edison and Minneapolis Washburn.
