And the winner is...MN Football Hub defensive top performer revealed

Athletes are considered for the weekly top performer poll only if their stats are entered on the MN Football Hub by 10 a.m. on Sundays. If coaches or members of their staffs need access to enter stats, please email mnhubs@sportngin.com.


Top performer winner

Logan Ness, Coon Rapids. The Cardinals notched a convincing victory to end their season at St. Cloud Apollo on Oct. 19, winning 62-0. Three of the Cardinals’ touchdowns came by way of defense, with three interceptions returned for touchdowns. The first was by Ness, as the junior returned his interception 26 yards for the score. Ness added two more picks and added six total tackles on the night. 

Top performer candidates

Anthony Fahnlander, Providence Academy. The Lions had to work into overtime for their second shutout over SMB on Oct. 19. The Lions defense was led by the junior Fahnlander, who made seven total tackles, forced a fumble and grabbed an interception in the 6-0 win.

Brady Heiling, MACCRAY. The junior had a highlight performance in the Wolverines’ final game of the regular season, making nine solo tackles and 24 total tackles, including two for a loss, in the 20-6 loss at Yellow Medicine East.

Nate Miller, Breck. The junior is averaging 12 tackles per game this season for the Mustangs, who won their most recent contest on Oct. 19, a 20-14 victory at Richfield. In addition to his 11 total tackles, Miller recorded a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception to lead the Mustang defense.

Jeffrey Ratliff, SMB. The Wolfpack suffered a disappointing loss on Oct. 19, holding off Providence Academy through four quarters before giving up the game's lone touchdown to the Lions in overtime. Ratliff led the Wolfpack defense. The sophomore made a season-high 10 tackles, including one for a loss, and three sacks.

Kyree Shaw, Spring Lake Park. The Panthers handed Robbinsdale Armstrong their second loss of the season,  holding the Falcons to just one touchdown on Oct. 19. Shaw made an impact on defense in the 21-6 victory, totaling eight total tackles and three sacks and forcing a fumble.

Kerome Thompson, Fridley. The senior has been a consistent solid presence on defense all season for the Tigers, averaging nearly 12 tackles per game. During the Tigers’ 47-0 rout of Columbia Heights on Oct. 19, Thompson made 13 total tackles and grabbed an interception.

Ashton Toll, Springfield. The Tigers finished their regular season with their fourth consecutive victory, defeating Minnesota Valley Lutheran 22-12. The junior eclipsed 100 total tackles on the season, adding 12 to his total in the Oct. 19 win, including four for a loss. Toll also added a sack and force two fumbles.

Cael Viesselman, East Ridge. Trailing by 23 points mid-way through the third quarter, the Raptors defense stepped up to allow its offense to come from behind and earn a 27-23 win against St. Michael-Albertville. Viesselman played a big part on defense, forcing three fumbles in a game where every possession mattered. The sophomore linebacker also made 10 tackles, including one for a loss.

Kaden Vig, Kittson County Central. The Bearcats, who have allowed an average of less than 10 points per game all season, ended the season with their eighth consecutive win to record an undefeated regular season. Vig made 86 tackles all season, 18 of those in the Bearcats’ 30-22 win at Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke on Oct. 18, including three for a loss. He added 2.5 sacks to bring his season total to 14.5, which is most across the state.
