Top performer winner

Gavin Nelson, Simley. The Spartans extended their undefeated streak to five games this season, thanks in part to their running back. Nelson took 25 of the Spartans’ 38 carries, rushing for 223 yards — an average of nearly nine yards per carry. The senior ran it into the end zone three times, including a 68-yard sprint to cap off the Spartans' 35-7 win against Robbinsdale Cooper.

Top performer candidates

Aaron Boarman, Holy Angels. The senior quarterback helped the Stars get back on track after a disappointing loss last week, and he did so in a big way — recording 332 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns to lead the Stars to a 41-7 victory against Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Boarman finished 13 of 15 passing for 237 yards and three TDs, including a game-opening 45-yard completion. He added 95 rushing yards on 11 carries, scoring twice on the ground, including a 29-yard run in the first quarter.

Jamarrius Courtney, Chaska. The senior quarterback ran his way to a Hawks win, scoring four rushing touchdowns to lead the Hawks’ 35-0 victory against Cretin-Derham Hall. Courtney took 13 carries for a season-high 215 rushing yards, scoring two of his four TDs on 49 and 82-yard runs. He added 48 passing yards on five completions for 263 all-purpose yards.

Jadon Hellerud, Shakopee. The senior running back played a key role in the Sabers’ 27-21 victory against Lakeville North, erasing a 14-point deficit in the second half with two third-quarter TDs. He added a third TD in overtime to give the Sabers the comeback win. Hellerud was responsible for over half of the Sabers’ rushing game, tallying 174 yards on 37 carries.

Jakob Nachreiner, Springfield. The junior quarterback led the Tigers to a 40-14 victory against St. James on Sept. 30, completing a season-high 20 passes for 344 yards and five TDs, three of which were over 40-yard completions. Nachreiner’s impressive performance slips him into the top 10 in the state in passing yards (1,082 yards, eighth place) and passing touchdowns (15, third place) on the season.

Landyn Nelson, Andover. The Huskies earned their third win of the season on Sept. 30, putting big numbers on the board yet again. Andover has scored at least 46 points in each win this season. The most recent victory, a 59-7 rout of Buffalo, marked the senior quarterback’s fourth game of the season recording over 200 all-purpose yards. Nelson was 18 of 23 on the night, throwing for 241 yards and five TDs — all of which found receiver Sam Musungu. Nelson added a sixth TD on the ground.

Dillon O’Connor, Fillmore Central. The senior quarterback racked up over 300 all-purpose yards to lead the Falcons to their fifth consecutive victory, a 29-8 win at Randolph. O’Connor completed 17 passes for 281 yards and tossed four TDs. He found receiver Bryce Corson for three of those scores, including completions of 49 and 50 yards.

Keegan Patterson, Sauk Rapids-Rice. The senior quarterback eclipsed the 300 passing yards mark for the first time this season en route to a 37-23 victory at Bemidji. Bemidji had an answer for each of the Storm’s first three TDs, two of which came from Patterson on the ground. The senior quarterback added a passing TD late in the third quarter. Patterson totaled 337 yards through the air and added 34 yards on the ground.

Max Shikenjanski, Stillwater. Shikenjanski has been solid all season, helping the Ponies put up at least 29 points in each of their five wins. In their 35-28 victory against White Bear Lake, the senior quarterback accounted for 27 rushing yards and a 14-yard rushing TD, in addition to 251 passing yards and four TDs.

Mason Sill, Edina. The kicker was on top of his game on Sept. 30. The senior converted on every opportunity he was given as the Hornets eked out a 34-31 victory against Farmington for their first win of the season. Sill went 4 of 4 in PATs and converted on two field goal opportunities, the first a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter. Sill was under pressure in a tie game with one second left on the clock in the fourth quarter when he was called on for his second field goal of the game. Sill converted on the 30-yard kick to send the Hornets home with the win.
