Trailing this season is something the St. Paul Harding/Humboldt football team hasn’t had to deal with this season. So when the Knighthawks were behind 14-6 after the first quarter against Minneapolis South, things started getting testy on the sideline.

“We were down on each other,” said running back Robert Htoo. “We were kind of yelling at each other.”

Eventually, things cooled on the Harding/Humboldt sideline and the Knighthawks pulled together and defeated the Tigers 28-26 with a combination of big plays and tough running.

First Report

After striking on its first play from scrimmage, St. Paul Harding/Humboldt relied on its high-powered offense to hold on and hand Minneapolis South its first loss of the season, 28-26, on Friday at South High School.

A false start prior to their first play moved the offense back to its own 15. The Knighthawks, ranked No. 10 in Class 5A by the Associated Press, scored right after on an 85-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jorge Irizarry to wide receiver Ai’Jhon Douglas. That was Harding/Humboldt’s lone completion of the game.

The Tigers (3-1) recovered and even took the lead. Nate Odren got South on the board with a 13-yard run. Minneapolis South took the lead late in the first quarter when Tiger quarterback Carter Bursinger found Rai’Shaun Wade for a touchdown.

Bursinger was the do-it-all guy for Minneapolis South. He finished the game with five of 12 for 79 yards and two passing touchdowns, 63 yards rushing and a score (passing, rushing, touchdowns) along with a fumble recovery on the other side of the ball. Wade was also a key player with 79 yards receiving and 135 yards rushing.

The teams traded scores and kept the scoring consistent despite a persistent downpour that began at halftime. The teams combined for more than 650 yards of offense in Friday’s game.

With the game tied at 20 late in the third quarter, Harding/Humboldt (4-0, 2-0) took the lead for good when Robert Htoo scored from 18 yards out. He proved to be the main source of offense for the Knighthawks in the second half. He finished the game with 15 carries for 109 yards.

Minneapolis South did score a touchdown on a pass from Bursinger to Wade but could not convert on the two-point try. The Tigers’ offense did get the ball into opposing territory but came up short when Burnsiger’s 49-yard field goal attempt was blocked.
