And the winner is...MN Football Hub defensive top performer revealed

Athletes are considered for the weekly top performer poll only if their stats are entered on the MN Football Hub by 10 a.m. on Sundays. If coaches or members of their staffs need access to enter stats, please email mnhubs@sportngin.com.


Top performer winner

Sawyer Skanson, Maple Grove. The senior recorded his second consecutive 16-tackle game on Oct. 15 as the Crimson defeated St. Michael-Albertville 38-17. Skanson made 12 of those tackles solo, and one was for a loss. He also recovered a fumble.

Top performer candidates

Alex Carstens, Chanhassen. Up against the state’s leading running back last week, the Storm needed a big defensive effort, and Carstens delivered. The Storm held Holy Angels’ high-powered offense in check as the senior linebacker made 17 total tackles. Carstens sits sixth in the state with 81 tackles this season.

David Connors, Robbinsdale Cooper. The Hawks doubled up Irondale's offensive effort on Oct. 15, winning 42-21. Connors made a season-high 15 tackles and had an interception to lead the Hawks' defense.

Ayden Goetzinger, Caledonia. The Warriors earned their second consecutive shutout win on Oct. 15, defeating Triton 22-0. The Warriors were led by Goetzinger, as the junior had a season-high 15 tackles and recovered a fumble.

Colton Gregersen, Burnsville. The senior linebacker led the Blaze's defense on Oct. 15, making seven solo tackles and 16 total tackles. He made four tackles for a loss, including two sacks. The Blaze lost to Eagan 14-17.

Griffin Hogg, Columbia Heights. The Hylanders handily defeated Minneapolis Roosevelt 46-0 on Oct. 16, led on defense by Hogg. The senior made eight total tackles, including one tackle for a loss, and 1.5 sacks. 

Charlie Ryks Breck. Along with being a threat on offense, the senior led the Mustangs' 55-13 rout of Minneapolis Henry on Oct. 15 with double digits in tackles — the sixth time he's reached that mark this season. Ryks, who is third in the state with 91 tackles this season and averages 13 total tackles per game. He led the Mustangs with 15 total tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

AuVon Sager, Minneapolis North. The junior tallied a season-high 10 total tackles on Oct. 14, leading the Polars’ defensive shutdown of Minneapolis Washburn. Sager also had 2.5 sacks — bringing his season total to a state-leading 10.5 — and a forced fumble and fumble recovery. The Polars won 52-0.

Blane Schmitz, Red Lake County. The Rebels tied a season best when they allowed just eight points on Oct. 15. In addition to scoring two of the Rebels’ three touchdowns, Schmitz led the defense with 10 total tackles, including two for a loss, and a fumble recovery as the Rebels defeated Menahga 22-8.

Mattix Swanson, Willmar. The Cardinals held Chisago Lakes to a single touchdown on Oct. 15, winning 41-6. They were led on defense by Swanson — who ranks second in the state with 97 tackles this season, averaging nearly 14 tackles per game — with 16 total tackles.
