Senior Jake Gaylord took the majority of snaps at quarterback for Mound-Westonka (5-0, 3-0) Friday night in a 28-21 victory over Fridley (3-2, 2-1), but the key to the win was the chemistry between Gaylord and fellow senior Tyler Von Bank.

Two seasons ago, Von Bank was the White Hawks’ starting quarterback. Once Gaylord developed more physically and the coaches saw the type of athlete Von Bank was on both sides of the ball, the team made a switch at quarterback that paid dividends tonight.

Mound-Westonka received big performances from both players in the win. Gaylord made a significant impact in the third quarter with six rushes for 74 yards and two touchdown runs. And when the Whitehawks needed two big fourth-down conversions midway through the fourth quarter, they turned to what they call their ‘Hawk’ formation with Von Bank as the quarterback.

“We just play our role. Coach David always tells us to play our role and I know my role. Tyler is a great runner, so when we turn to him, he’s going to get it in the endzone,” Gaylord said.

First Report

Down 13-7 heading into the second half, Mound-Westonka (4-0, 3-0) got big plays from two of

its senior leaders late to secure a significant Twin City-Maroon district victory over Fridley (3-2, 2-1) Friday night 28-21.

After he had a slow start on the ground in the first half, senior quarterback Jake Gaylord came out with six rushes in the third quarter to gash the Tiger defense. Gaylord ran for 74 yards and added two scores with his legs in the third quarter to keep the White Hawks in the game down one.

But when Mound-Westonka needed to convert on two fourth downs late in the fourth quarter, head coach Nick David went to Tyler Von Bank to help take the lead. First, Von Bank kept the drive alive with a 21-yard gain and later followed that up with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jake Dallman that was nearly intercepted in the endzone.

Fridley senior receiver Devin Williams helped give the Tigers the lead in the first half by turning two short catches into long touchdowns. Junior quarterback M.J. Newton played well in the first half, completing seven of eight passes, but threw two costly interceptions in the second half.
