Top performer winner

Connor Owens, Willmar. The Cardinals narrowly defeated Sartell-St. Stephen on Sept. 24, backed by Owen's solid defense. After two first quarter touchdowns, the Cardinals held Sartell-St. Stephen off the score board until a safety with less than one minute remaining in the fourth quarter. Owens recorded four tackles for a loss, 15 tackles total, and a fumble recovery.

Top performer candidates

Grant Achterkirch, Owatonna. After being on the wrong side of a lopsided game last week, the Huskies flipped the switch and handed Austin a 51-7 loss on Sept. 25. The senior led the Huskies’ defense with six solo tackles and 12 total tackles.

Darrick Baartman, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton. In addition to one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown, Baartman scored two defensive touchdowns as the Knights defeated MACCRAY 36-8 on Sept. 24. The senior recovered a fumble in the end zone for a third quarter touchdown, then grabbed an interception the next quarter and returned it 45 yards for another score.

Konner Harpestad, United South Central. The Rebels shut down Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons’ offense on Sept. 25 to earn their second win of the season. The senior linebacker led the Rebels' defense in the 55-0 with 12 tackles, one sack and forced a fumble.

Max Hatfield, Chaska. The Hawks stifled Waconia’s offense, holding them scoreless and to double digits in both passing and rushing yards as the Hawks earned their fourth consecutive win. The senior linebacker led the Hawks with 10 tackles, including one for a loss, in the 7-0 victory.

Zach Juckel, Lakeville South. The senior linebacker recorded his third game this season with at least a dozen tackles as the Cougars defeated Farmington 36-14 on Sept. 24. Juckel made 12 total tackles, including three for a loss.

Drew Kuempel, Robbinsdale Armstrong. The Falcons held Bloomington Jefferson scoreless in the first half of their Sept. 24 contest, allowing their offense to build up a 27-point lead that Jefferson couldn’t overcome. Kuempel bolstered the Falcon defense with six solo tackles, 12 total tackles and a sack as the Falcons won 41-14.

Gavin Pike, Rochester Mayo. The senior helped the Spartans extend their winning streak to four games as they defeated Rochester John Marshall on Sept. 24. Pike made 10 total tackles, including one for a loss. He added one sack and forced a fumble in the 53-6 victory.

Micah Runion, Park of Cottage Grove. The senior linebacker led the Wolfpack’s 45-7 win at Hopkins on Sept. 24, making a season-high 13 total tackles, including two for a loss.

Clete Scherer, Delano. The Tigers held Big Lake scoreless on Sept. 24, thanks in part to Scherer’s defense. The senior linebacker had his eyes focused on the opposing quarterback, making three sacks — his first since week one nearly a month prior. Scherer added nine tackles to lead the Tiger defense.
