Lakeville South quarterback Camden Dean had a simple explanation for his team's rushing success in its 12-0 victory over intradistrict rival Lakeville North on Friday.
"Weight room," he said. "Weight room, weight room, weight room. … We’re in the weight room tomorrow morning, 7 a.m. We’re going to keep doing that: Wear teams down. There's not a team stronger than us."
Dean and the Cougars (2-0) rushed for 234 yards, led by 83 yards from Carson Hansen and 75 from Josh Jacobson, as they defeated Lakeville North (1-1) for a third straight year.
On defense they limited the Panthers to 150 yards, including just 105 rushing yards on 29 attempts, and intercepted two passes.
"We wanted it more, and that's what it came down to," Dean said.
Lakeville South ran the ball on all but three offensive plays, averaging over 4.6 yards per carry.
The Cougars' first drive lasted 19 plays and covered 79 yards but ended with an incomplete pass near the goal line. Dean capped the next drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown on fourth-and-goal, and Ian Segna scored a 6-yard rushing touchdown on their third drive. A 38-yard run by Hansen on a third-and-13 earlier in the drive had moved the Cougars into scoring position.
The Cougars defense allowed just three plays of 10 or more yards and none longer than 18 yards.
Lakeville South coach Ben Burk said the team commits its best athletes to defense and pays special attention to stopping the run.
"That's where we put all of our energy defensively, and then we try to take away the other team's best plays," he said. "That's what we did tonight."
Gavyn Schraufnagel led Lakeville North in rushing with 58 yards on 16 attempts, and quarterback Jackson Hanson added 28 rushing yards. The team moved into Lakeville South territory late in the third quarter, but an interception ended the drive.
Lakeville North coach Brian Vossen said he thought his team matched the Cougars well in terms of  physicality.
"When you play the No. 1 team in the state, Week 2, and you're able to do that, it shows that you're moving in the right direction," he said.
