Eagles muster offense to topple Wayzata for Class 5A crown

PREP BOWL. Class 5A championship game. Eden Prairie vs. Wayzata. Eden Prairie won the 5A championship 13-3. Players jubilating at the end of the game.

From zero to the heroes.

Eden Prairie's offense, shut out in the regular season finale by Wayzata, scored the game's only touchdown in a 13-3 victory Friday against those same Trojans in the Class 5A football state championship game at the Metrodome.

Leading 6-3 in the fourth quarter, the Eagles executed a reverse flea-flicker on fourth and 14. Quarterback Grant Schaeffer found Jake Woodring at the Wayzata 5-yard line. A few plays later, Larson darted in from 10 yards with 2 minutes, 45 seconds to play.

With the victory, No. 4 Eden Prairie (12-1) won its seventh big-school state title since 1996. No. 1 Wayzata (12-1), the defending champion, was aiming for its fourth title. Friday marked the eighth consecutive season in which one of the teams reached the 5A title game.

Eden Prairie was held to 109 yards in the regular season meeting, but doubled its production Friday with 240 yards. Larson ran 33 times for 124 yards, and Schaeffer completed seven of 10 passes for 62 yards.

The better performance, Larson said, was something the offense owed the team.

"Our defense is so phenomenal," Larson said. "They shut down every team so it's kind of pressure on the offense to match the defense."

Both defenses dominated into the fourth quarter, witnessed by Eden Prairie's lead with 7:30 to play, courtesy of two Jake Ibach field goals .

Eden Prairie intercepted Wayzata quarterback Nick Martin twice to that point, including a disputed second-quarter interception at its 2 that stopped Wayzata's best scoring chance short. Eden Prairie's Matt Knoff and Wayzata's Jeff Borchardt tussled for the football as they hit the ground, and referees awarded Knoff the interception.

Martin seemed poised to regroup in the second half. His 20-yard completion in the third quarter became the Trojans' longest gain of the game. The drive continued but when the third quarter ended, it marked seven consecutive quarters without a touchdown between the teams.

Tyler Scott's 32-yard field goal with 7 minutes, 30 seconds to play cut Eden Prairie's lead to 6-3.

Though Eden Prairie's ensuing drive ended with a punt, the Eagles defense made a huge play. Defensive end Melvin DeSouza tracked down speedy Wayzata running back Erik Roti in the flat on a swing pass, stripped the ball and recovered at the Trojans' 26. Schaeffer's gutsy reverse flea-flicker moved the Eagles to the 5-yard line.

"He's not too much of a risk taker," Larson said of Eagles' coach Mike Grant. "But when we need to, he'll take a risk.

A few plays later, Larson scored, solidifying Eden Prairie's hold on the game and a seventh state title.

The teams' head-to-head history is brief yet colorful. From 2005-09, Eden Prairie won all three meetings. Wayzata won the next two games, locking up Lake Conference titles each time.
