Star Tribune roundup: Owatonna outlasts Rochester Mayo for fifth consecutive section title

Owatonna 30, Rochester Mayo 28: Connor Budach’s fumble recovery in the final minute helped the Huskies outlast the Spartans for its fifth consecutive Class 5A, Section 1 championship.

With the score tied 28-28 in the third quarter, the Huskies took the lead on a safety, when a Spartans punt snap went through the end zone.

The section concluded play Tuesday because its field had been reduced by COVID-19 issues at other schools.

Northfield 17, Austin 0: The Raiders finished the season on a positive note, shutting out the host Packers in the Class 5A, Section 1 fifth-place game for the first victory of the season. Josh Johnson and Blake Mellgren had touchdown runs in the second half for the Raiders (1-6), who led 3-0 at halftime.

Edina 28, Osseo 0: George Sandven threw three touchdown passes to propel the Hornets (2-5) past the visiting Orioles.

Minnetonka 7, Woodbury 3: Ben Tolkinen’s 23-yard touchdown run in the second quarter helped the Skippers (2-5) outlast the Royals in the Class 6A first-round game.

Rockford 16, Holy Family 10: Sam Zilmer threw a 15-yard TD pass and ran for a TD in the fourth quarter as the host Rockets rallied from a 10-0 deficit for the Class 3A, Section 2 quarterfinal victory.

Monticello 50, St. Cloud Tech 21: Sam Valor scored five touchdowns to lead the host Magic past the Tigers in the Class 5A, Section 6 quarterfinals. Valor ran for three touchdowns, caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the fourth-seeded Magic (4-2).

After the fifth-seeded Tigers (0-5) scored midway through the first quarter to take an 8-7 lead, Valor returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. A two-point conversion gave the Magic a 15-8 lead.

Valor scored on an 82-yard TD run in the opening minute of the second quarter to give the Magic a 21-8 lead. He scored twice in the third quarter as the Magic opened a 50-15 lead.

Kasson-Mantorville 7, Byron 0: Jace Bigelow’s interception in the final minute of the fourth quarter — his second of the game — helped host Kasson-Mantorville hold on to defeat Byron for the Class 4A, Section 1 championship.

Byron had blocked a punt and recovered it at midfield with 28 seconds left. Bigelow’s interception came after the Bears got a first down at the KoMets’ 32 with 18 seconds left.

Matt Donovan scored on a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter for the KoMets, who earned their first section championship since 2013.

Big Lake 28, Zimmerman 12: Rieley Mullen ran for two touchdowns and Jack Iverson returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown to lift the Hornets to the Class 4A, Section 6 quarterfinal victory. Iverson’s touchdown gave the fifth-seeded Hornets (2-5) a 27-0 lead in the third quarter.

Dassel-Cokato 40, Watertown-Mayer 16: Eli Gillman returned the second half kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown to help the host Chargers pull away for the Class 3A, Section 2 quarterfinal victory. Gillman’s return extended the Chargers lead to 25-7. He scored on a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the Chargers a 32-9 lead.
