Star Tribune roundup: Big Lake upsets Marshall for first win of season

Big Lake outlasted Marshall, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, 16-13 on Wednesday to earn its first victory of the season.

The Hornets (1-5), who trailed 13-9 at halftime, took the lead midway through the third quarter when Haden Thieke returned a fumble 20 yards for a touchdown.

Thieke’s go-ahead score came after Marshall (4-2) intercepted a Big Lake pass but fumbled during the return, which Thieke recovered.

Tyler Maeyaert completed touchdown passes of 73 and 61 yards to Bryce Lance in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 13-6 lead. Lance finished with nine receptions for 232 yards.

The game was played at New London-Spicer High School.

New Prague 21, Rochester Century 14: Brody Wolch returned two kickoffs for touchdowns to spark the visiting Trojans past the Panthers. Wolch opened the game with an 80-yard return for a score. After the Panthers pulled within 14-6 in the second quarter, he returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a 20-6 lead. The Panthers scored with  1 minute, 27 seconds left but the Trojans (2-2), playing for the first time since Oct. 23, were able to hold on.

Blaine 45, Anoka 10: Josh Schlangen rushed for 291 yards on 32 carries and scored three touchdowns as the visiting Bengals, ranked No. 7 in Class 6A, pulled away in the second half. Dylan Muyres caught two touchdown passes in the first half as the Bengals built a 14-3 halftime lead before Schlangen scored on runs for 25, 1 and 3 yards.

Hill-Murray 38, South St. Paul 21: Sawyer Seidl carried the ball 44 times for 315 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Pioneers past the Packers. Seidl’s 79-yard TD run in the first quarter gave the Pioneers a 13-0 lead. He scored on runs of 11 and 4 yards in the second half. Colton Becker rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns for the Packers.

Moorhead 27, Bemidji 13: The host Spuds, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, pulled away from the No. 8 Lumberjacks in the second half to improve to 6-0. The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime.

Concordia Academy 44, Minneapolis South 19: Jaden Quast rushed for four touchdowns — two in each half — to lead the Beacons (3-2) past the host Tigers (3-3).

Roseville 18, Mounds View 14: Anthony Vo scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 16 yards to help the host Raiders rally for the victory over the Mustangs. The Raiders trailed 14-6 at halftime after the Mustangs returned two blocked punts for touchdowns. Cole Sandahl, who blocked both of the punts, and Tate Lahr each returned one of the blocks for Mustang touchdowns. Sajin Thao and Vo scored touchdowns in the third quarter to give Roseville the lead.

Wayzata 35, Burnsville 0: Seniors Anthony Richmond and Sean Diedrich each ran for two touchdowns to lead the visiting Trojans (2-4) past the Blaze (1-5).
