Star Tribune roundup: STMA outlasts Prior Lake, Monticello edges Owatonna

David Collins rushed for 262 yards and three touchdowns and Jack Drobinski passed for 241 yards and three touchdowns to help host St. Michael-Albertville, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, outlast No. 6 Prior Lake 43-37 on Friday night.

Collins’ first touchdown of 65 yards gave the Knights a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter. Collins had two 49-yard touchdown runs in the second half.

After Prior Lake scored early in the fourth quarter to pull within 28-27, Collins scored 90 seconds later to put the Knights up 34-27.

Monticello 7, Owatonna 6: The host Magic blocked a extra-point attempt in the first quarter and then watched a botched field goal attempt on the final play of the game in defeating the Huskies, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A.

It was Owatonna’s first regular-season loss since 2017. The Huskies had won 20 consecutive regular-season games.

The Huskies lined up for a 30-yard field attempt with two seconds left, but the snap was mishandled.

Monticello (3-1) tied the score with about nine minutes left in the third quarter on Sam Valor’s 15-yard touchdown run. Wyatt Sawatzke kicked the extra point.

Moorhead 21, Rogers 0: Unbeaten Moorhead, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, handed the Royals, ranked No. 4 in the same class, its first loss of the season.

Rocori 14, Becker 13: Brady Linn ran for a touchdown and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone to lift the defending Class 4A state champion Spartans over the Bulldogs. Linn’s 5-yard TD run in the second quarter staked the Spartans, tied for No. 4 in Class 4A, to a 6-0 lead. Becker, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, scored twice in the third quarter to take a 13-6 lead. Linn’s recovery and the subsequent two-point conversion midway through the fourth quarter gave Rocori the lead. A late Becker possession was stopped by an interception.

Willmar 28, Hutchinson 24: Willmar, tied for No. 10 in Class 4A, rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to hand Hutchinson, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, its first loss of the season. Alex Schramm scored three touchdowns for Willmar.

Minneapolis North 38, SMB 33: The Polars, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, outlasted the visiting Wolfpack for their 57th consecutive regular-season victory.

North St. Paul 27, DeLaSalle 25: The Polars outlasted the Islanders to end a 34-game losing streak dating to 2016.

Watertown-Mayer 28, Glencoe-Silver Lake 10: The Royals defeated the host Panthers to end a 29-game losing streak, which dated to their first game of 2017.

Canceled: The Brooklyn Center at Breck game was canceled on Friday afternoon due to a “potential exposure of a Breck student-athlete to a COVID-19 case,” according to a tweet from the Brooklyn Center athletics twitter account.
