Metro prep football picks experts head into season's second half even up

Star Tribune staff writers Jim Paulsen and David La Vaque size up three top metro-area games. Plus the metro top 10 in action and schedule of metro team games.

It’s rivalry week for many schools but prep prognosticators David La Vaque and Jim Paulsen, tied with 9-3 records heading into the second half of this abbreviated season, can’t find much to disagree on.

LAKEVILLE NORTH (1-1) AT LAKEVILLE SOUTH (3-0), 7 p.m.

Jim says: Lakeville North heads into Week 4 without having played an originally scheduled opponent. Typically strong on defense, the Panthers will need a muscular effort against Lakeville South, which averages 430 yards rushing per game. Lakeville South 33, Lakeville North 27

David says: A Lakeville South assistant coach razzed me for picking against the Cougars last week. I won’t make that mistake again. However, now I’ll hear it from Lakeville North coach Brian Vossen. It’s all in fun. Lakeville South 28, Lakeville North 21

MAPLE GROVE (2-1) AT OSSEO (2-1), 7 p.m.

Jim says: Osseo has already won as many games as it did in the previous two seasons combined. Coming off a rousing, late-game victory over Totino-Grace, can the Orioles muster another inspired effort against their archrivals? Maple Grove 20, Osseo 13

David says: Soaring Orioles. Fallen leaves. The Maple Grove Crimson (the logo is a leaf) got humbled last week by Centennial. A rivalry game is just the thing to get the juices flowing. Maple Grove 21, Osseo 17

EAST RIDGE (2-0) AT WOODBURY (2-1), SATURDAY, NOON

Jim says: Missing three linemen and prone to mistakes, Woodbury still went toe-to-toe with Rosemount in a Monday night loss. With the bad taste lingering and a boost from playing their biggest rival, the Royals bounce back strong. Woodbury 24, East Ridge 12

David says: East Ridge blanking Lakeville North last week made quite the statement. And the Raptors will give Woodbury fits. But to Jim’s point, a Royals team at full strength holds the edge. Woodbury 28, East Ridge 24
