Jim Paulsen and David La Vaque size up three top metro-area games.

Orono running back Aidan Mueller celebrated a third quarter touchdown last week vs. Cooper (Aaron Lavinsky / Star Tribune)

Tied with 7-2 records through three rounds of football picks, high school sportswriters David La Vaque and Jim Paulsen seek separation this week, disagreeing on two games.

LAKEVILLE SOUTH (2-0) AT PRIOR LAKE (2-0), 7 p.m.

Jim says: Lakeville South’s power-T offense has been bringing offensive pressure in waves. Thirteen players have carried the football at least twice as the Cougars have run for more than 450 yards per game. A relentless attack that wears teams down. Lakeville South 40, Prior Lake 21

David says: Lakeville South hasn’t seen this caliber of opponent. A strong offensive line enabled RB Tyler Shaver to rush for more than 160 yards in each of the first two games. The Lakers’ defense has permitted just one second-half touchdown. Prior Lake 28, Lakeville South 21

ORONO (2-0) AT CHASKA (2-0), 7 p.m.

Jim says: Chaska rallied from a 12-0 deficit last week to defeat Armstrong 19-12. This week the Hawks face a team that’s big up front, has tall, athletic receivers, a versatile QB and stuffs the run on defense. Expect a rock ’em, sock ’em affair. Chaska 20, Orono 12

David says: Crush Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Hold off Cooper. Check and check. Orono keeps the party going this week with an upset of the defending Class 5A state champs. Orono coach Joe McPherson has his guys ready. Orono 24, Chaska 17

MAHTOMEDI (2-0) AT ST. THOMAS ACADEMY (2-0), 7 p.m.

Jim says: Mahtomedi QB Johnny DeVore threw for 348 yards and five TDs against Hill-Murray last week. St. Thomas’ defense is far more stout. The typically stingy Cadets have allowed just two TDs this season. DeVore will find things a little less open. St. Thomas Academy 34, Mahtomedi 16

David says: Let’s just start with Mahtomedi scoring a point against the Cadets, something the Zephyrs haven’t done since the first half of their 2017 victory. But snapping a 10-quarter scoreless slump won’t be enough. St. Thomas Academy 30, Mahtomedi 10
