It was a moment he won’t forget, for many reasons. The 2020 season was very much in the air, but once the chance came for Jack Drobinski to lace up the cleats for his first high school start, he was ready.

Completing nine passes for 112 yards, with no turnovers, Drobinski led the Knights to a 29-26 win over Shakopee in Class 6A football Friday night at Vaughan Field at Shakopee Middle School.

“The first half I was a little nervous, but once I hit a big seam throw in the second [quarter], I felt really comfortable and locked in,” Drobinski said.

That 25-yard seam throw jump-started the Knights’ offense. On the very next play, running back David Collins found a gap and blasted his way to a 41-yard touchdown run. The play gave the Knights a 14-6 lead early in the third quarter.

First Report

Quarterback Jack Drobinski, in his first start, and star running back David Collins led St. Michael-Albertville to a 29-26 victory over Metro West Subdistrict foe Shakopee Friday night at Vaughan Field.

After the Sabers (0-1, 0-1) opened with a 92-yard touchdown drive, the Knights (1-0, 1-0) settled in with a pair of touchdown runs from Collins, including a 41-yard burst into the end zone in the third quarter. The Sabers responded with a pair of TDs, however, highlighted by a 69-yard catch by Michael Pennington, to take a 19-14 lead.

After a 19-yard touchdown pass from Drobinksi helped the Knights regain the lead, backup running back Jarrett Bennett sealed the win with a 14-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

Collins finished with a game-high 144 yards on the ground, while Drobinski threw for 112 yards and a TD.

Shakopee quarterback David Bigaouette completed seven of his nine passes for 139 yards, while also gaining 115 yards with his legs.
