HUTCHINSON - With the highest-scoring offense in Class AAAA, the fifth-ranked Marshall football team had made opponents feel helpless defensively as the Tigers recorded blowout wins in their first nine games. In Saturday's Section 2AAAA semifinal against fourth-ranked Hutchinson, the Marshall players saw the tables turned.

Hutchinson controlled possession for more than twice as long as Marshall (32:18 to 15:42) and pounded the football for 375 yards on 62 carries with five rushing touchdowns by quarterback McKinley Anderson as No. 2 seed Hutchinson overpowered No. 3 seed Marshall in a 42-28 victory.

The key play of the game came with 16 seconds left in the second quarter when Dacotah Thompson picked off a screen pass by Marshall quarterback Alex Fenske and returned it to the Marshall 16-yard line. On the next play, Anderson recorded his only completion of the game, with wide receiver Trace Adams hauling in the 16-yard touchdown pass between a pair of Tiger defensive backs in the end zone to put Hutchinson up 21-7 with one second left on the clock.
