A look at some basic formations in use by three metro teams having impressive seasons

ELK RIVER

Coach: Steve Hamilton

Record: 5-1

Offense: Straight-T

What it involves: Two tight ends, no wide receivers, four backs in the backfield, ball fakes and deception.

Bread-and-butter play: Straight dive by the fullback.

Results: Fullback Moses Saygbe has rushed for 1,011 yards in six games.

SHAKOPEE

Coach: Jody Stone

Record: 6-0

Offense: Single wing

What it involves: No space between offensive linemen, tight formations, direct snaps, ball fakes by the quarterback.

Bread-and-butter play: Quarterback dive.

Results: Quarterback Zak Hoffman rushed 30 times for 117 yards in a victory over previously undefeated Holy Angels.

ST. CROIX LUTHERAN

Coach: Carl Lemke

Record: 6-0

Offense: Veer (split-back) option

What it involves: Trap and angle blocking, precise timing, quick-hitting dives through the line, quarterback who can read the defense.

Bread-and-butter play: Fake dive, quarterback option pitch.

Results: Crusaders lead the metro, averaging 43 points per game.
