Namesake: Dale Vaughan coached football in Shakopee for 25 years and later was the school's athletics director. He enjoyed the gift of gab almost as much as guiding football teams to more than 130 victories, saying in 1987: "There are a number of thrills [in football], and it isn't what you [sportswriters] write about. It's seeing a bum come in as a sophomore, play football and go out of here as a young, strong citizen."

He was also a social studies teacher, mail carrier and father of eight. He held a weekly class for mothers of players to show them game film of their sons.

Vaughan died in 1993. The field was named for him when it underwent a $1.5 million renovation the next year.

"He loved young people and did so much for them," said his son Bob, who coaches Braham boys' basketball. "He would have been filled with pride to see that what he did still lives on."
