Top performer winner

Cole Smutny, Woodbury. The Royals defense kept Stillwater off the scoreboard until the third quarter, an effort powered by the senior linebacker who finished the night with 12 total tackles — two for a loss — and two sacks.

Top performer candidates

Anthony Gipson, Maple Grove. The senior made 10 total tackles, including four for a loss, in the Crimson’s 17-7 victory over Blaine and now has 53 tackles on the season — seventh most in the state. He also had a sack and blocked a kick versus the Bengals.

Jack Klancher, Crosby-Ironton. The junior has a team-leading 26 tackles this season — and that's in just two games. Klancher's most recent game was a 15-tackle effort in the Rangers’ 36-22 victory against Pine City.

Ethan Koep, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda. In the Coyotes’ 42-28 triumph over Edgerton/Ellsworth, the senior made 19 tackles — as many tackles as he had in the previous three games combined — to lead the Coyotes defense. One of those tackles was recorded for a loss.

Cole McKinney, SMB. The senior dominated on defense, leading a Wolfpack team that held Providence Academy to just one touchdown in the first quarter. McKinney made 10 tackles — seven of which were for a loss — and recorded three sacks in the 28-6 win.

IBK Mafe, Blaine. The Bengals may have lost 17-7 to Maple Grove, but the junior linebacker was the leading defensive player on the field for either team. He registered a game-high eight solo tackles and finished with 15 total tackles. His 55 tackles this season is fifth most in the state.

Cole Mundt, Lewiston-Altura. The senior led a stingy defense on the road as the Cardinals shut out Fillmore Central. Mundt made 12 total tackles (one for a loss) in the 14-0 victory.

Austin Nelson, Forest Lake. The Rangers held off Park Center’s rally attempt with help from the senior, who had three tackles for a loss (12 total tackles) and one interception in the 21-13 win.

Cole Smutny, Woodbury. The Royals defense kept Stillwater off the scoreboard until the third quarter, an effort powered by the senior linebacker who finished the night with 12 total tackles — two for a loss — and two sacks.

Steele Walsh, Roseau. Despite allowing three touchdowns, the Rams defense had many highlights in its 34-22 victory at Hawley — including two defensive touchdowns and 68 total tackles. The defense was led by sophomore Walsh, who had 15 tackles.

Ian Ziebarth, Park Christian. The senior has had an impressive first half of the season, making 35 total tackles in his last two games. His most impressive outing came in the Falcons’ 24-7 loss to Kittson County Central, when made 19 tackles — one fourth of the team’s total tackles in the game — including one for a loss.
