And the winner is...MN Football Hub defensive top performer revealed

Top performer winner

Joe Marinaro, Benilde-St. Margaret’s (3-0, 2-0). In addition to scoring the Red Knights’ winning touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, the senior was a leader on defense. Marinaro made 10 solo tackles (11 total), including three for a loss, as well as registering his first two sacks of the season as the Red Knights defeated Chanhassen 14-7.

Top performer candidates

John Blake, Breck (3-0, 1-0). The senior led the Mustangs defense with 10 solo tackles (11 total), including one for a loss, and a forced a fumble in a 43-22 win against Brooklyn Center.

Matt Clark, South Ridge (2-1, 1-0). The Panthers defense held Ely to single-digit scoring thanks to the senior's season-high 15 tackles and one sack in a 32-6 victory.

Anthony Gipson, Maple Grove (1-2, 0-1). The senior had his third straight game with 12 or more solo tackles to help the Crimson hold down Edina in a 20-7 home victory. Gipson had 17 total tackles, including two for a loss, and is among the state's leader in the stat with 43 total tackles through three games this season.

Michael Johnston, Monticello (1-2, 1-1). In a 16-7 Magic loss to Andover, the senior turned in a solid game on defense. Johnston made 16 tackles — including two for a loss — to bring his season total to 40 tackles.

Stevo Klotz, Chaska (3-0, 2-0). The senior linebacker led the Hawks defense in a 38-7 win against Orono, recording nine tackles and one sack. Klotz also scored on special teams by blocking a kick and returning the ball 25 yards to the end zone.

Brandon Lampi, Buffalo (1-2, 1-1). The senior produced his second consecutive 14-tackle game and helped the Bison beat Chisago Lakes 26-20. Two of Lampi's tackles were for a loss and also grabbed his first interception of the season as Buffalo notched its first victory of the season.

Jake Meissner, Providence Academy (1-2, 0-1). The sophomore made 16 total tackles, including 12 solo, and recorded his second forced fumble of the season as the Lions lost 21-20 to Mound Westonka.

Cole Sanow, Minneota (3-0, 2-0). The senior stepped up in a close game for the Vikings, making 14 total tackles – more than he had in his previous two games combined – and had one for a loss in the Vikings’ 22-18 win against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

Nick Wypy, Lakeville North (3-0, 2-0). The senior made 11 total tackles and recovered a fumble to power the Panthers to a dominating 20-3 win at Rosemount.
