And the winner is...MN Football Hub defensive top performer revealed

Athletes are considered for the weekly top performer poll only if their stats are entered on the MN Football Hub by 10 a.m. on Sundays. If coaches or members of their staffs need access to enter stats, please email mnhubs@sportngin.com.


Top performer winner

Darnell McCrea, Benilde-St. Margaret’s. In a 21-7 win over Orono, the junior led the defense with seven total tackles, including one for a loss, and 1 1/2 sacks, as the Red Knights held Orono to just 151 total yards.

Top performer candidates

Kolin Baier, Mankato East. The senior linebacker powered the Cougars to a 27-7 win over Kasson-Mantorville. Baier had 15 tackles, including two solo tackles, to lead the defense that allowed the KoMets their only points on a TD late in the second quarter.

Adam Brown, Delano. In the Tigers’ season-opening 31-24 win against Sauk Rapids-Rice, the junior contributed a career-high 10 solo tackles (13 total). Brown also forced and recovered a fumble.

Nyle Dickel, Minneapolis Washburn. The junior started the season with a career-high nine total tackles (five solo), helping the Millers record a 37-0 win against St. Paul Como Park.

Kevin Garcia, Murray County Central. The sophomore led the Rebels defense with 12 total tackles — with six solo tackles and one tackle for a loss — in a 36-14 victory over Yellow Medicine East. 

Colton Hackel, Perham. The sophomore had an impressive all-around performance, leading the Yellowjackets on both sides of the ball in a 16-13 win against Breckenridge. Hackel shined particularly bright on defense, making a career-high 10 solo tackles and four assisted tackles.

Zach Stroh, Elk River. The senior energized the Elks defensive and helped  shut down Brainerd’s offense in a 57-0 victory. Stroh tallied 14 total tackles (10 solo) and recovered a fumble.

Tim Thein, New London-Spicer. In the Wildcats' 33-20 win over Milaca, the junior took the reins as leader on defense, making 16 total tackles — including 11 solo tackles and one for a loss. Thein also recovered a fumble.

Ryan Wilmes, St. Peter. The linebacker started his season strong, recording six solo and six assisted tackles to set a new career high for total tackles (12) in the Saints’ 41-0 win against Sibley East. One of Wilmes’ tackles was for a loss.

Nick Wypy, Lakeville North. In a 24-7 win over Woodbury, the senior linebacker tied his career high with 19 total tackles. He registered nine solo tackles and four for a loss while also finishing with two sacks.
