We task our reporters with identifying several intriguing games throughout the state to assemble our Top Games of the Week. The matchups are presented in no particular order, and when there are additional games we want to highlight, we’ll include them with brief notes.
Edina vs. Wayzata, 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6. Power. Finesse. Defense. Wayzata (1-0) unveiled plenty of all three in an impressive 19-0 rout of Blaine in last week’s season opener. Edina (1-0) was a Week 1 winner as well, holding off pesky Centennial 28-20.
Mountain Iron-Buhl vs. Cherry, 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6. We go north for a matchup between 9-Man neighbors on the Iron Range. Mountain Iron-Buhl is a perennial powerhouse that reached the 9-Man semifinals last year. Cherry has a varsity football squad for the first time since 2015. Both teams were impressive in their openers — Mountain Iron-Buhl (1-0) crushed Ely 58-0, and Cherry (1-0) had a successful debut, beating Lake of the Woods 50-6.
Minneapolis North vs. Minneapolis Southwest, 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6. Can anyone stop the freight train that is Minneapolis North? St. Paul Johnson certainly couldn’t last week, falling 26-6 as the Polars (1-0) — 46-3 in the past four seasons — got 216 passing yards. And in its debut, Minneapolis Southwest (1-0) notched a 29-0 victory over St. Paul Highland Park.
