Staff writers David La Vaque and Jim Paulsen disagree on just about everything. Who will win on Friday night is one of the few arguments that is publishable. Tally so far: Jim 5, David 4.

ST. THOMAS ACADEMY AT MAHTOMEDI, 7 P.M.

David says: Mahtomedi 27, St. Thomas Academy 20

These two teams have played some memorable games in recent years featuring some of the best talent in Class 4A. A lack of household names doesn't diminish this matchup. If Mahtomedi's improved passing game gets on track, the Cadets won't be able to keep pace.

Jim says: St. Thomas Academy 20, Mahtomedi 12

Like good servicemen, the Cadets take defending seriously. Through two games, St. Thomas has allowed less than 300 total yards and zero points. The offense has been nearly as good, topping 40 points twice. Here's a gauge: Both teams have shut out Simley, but St. Thomas did it on the road.

CHAMPLIN PARK AT BLAINE, 7 P.M.

David says: Blaine 26, Champlin Park 13

Quarterback Duke Anyanwu ran for 216 yards and four touchdowns to beat Hopkins last week. And he can hurt the Rebels defense in similar fashion, given the way Eden Prairie running back Andrew Larson gashed Champlin Park for 199 yards two weeks ago.

Jim says: Champlin Park 27, Blaine 20

At full strength with dynamic tailback Michael Sales back in the fold and battle-tested after a tough season-opening loss to Eden Prairie, expect Champlin Park to come out firing against its biggest gridiron rival. And they have a Duke in their sights.

ROGERS AT ST. MICHAEL- ALBERTVILLE, 7 P.M.

David says: St. Michael-Albertville 26, Rogers 22

The Knights are climbing the ladder effectively this season, rushing to victory in the season opener and throwing the ball well last week against Becker. They can also apply pressure in kick and punt return situations, a full arsenal they'll need to edge Rogers.

Jim says: Rogers 30, St. Michael-Albertville 16.

Despite losing some serious talent to graduation, 2010 Class 4A runner-up Rogers has not missed a step. The athletic Royals have given up just eight points to Sauk Rapids and Monticello, neither of which is a pushover. Toss in a balanced offense and it's tough to pick against them.
