Minnewaska gridders open season early

The Lakers are one of 12 teams encountering scheduling problems

The Minnesota football team will open up the 2011 season with a couple new challenges on its plate as it tries to build on a 4-5 season from a year ago.

The Lakers opened up camp a week early this season as a part of a new Minnesota State High School League scheduling rule termed “zero week.” Minnewaska was one of 12 football programs in Minnesota that was allowed to open practices a week early and play its first game of the season a week early. The rule was designed to help teams that encounter scheduling problems.
