Caledonia vs. Stewartville

7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16

No, Caledonia isn’t unbeatable. It's a verifiable fact the Warriors ended the 2014 season with a 21-0 loss to BOLD in the semifinals of the state tournament. OK, that was six years, five straight Class 2A titles and 69 consecutive victories (the nation’s longest current winning streak) ago. On second thought, maybe Caledonia (1-0, 0-0) is unbeatable.

The Warriors’ 26-0 victory over highly regarded Minneapolis North in last year’s state title game cemented their status as the state’s small-school version of Class 6A juggernaut Eden Prairie (both programs have a state-best 11 titles).

Caledonia junior Eli King was his usual superstar self in the Warriors’ 26-8 season-opening win over Plainview-Elgin-Millville on Oct. 10. He completed 17 of 35 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown, had TD runs of 3 and 11 yards, respectively, and returned a kickoff 82 yards for another touchdown.

Stewartville, which went 7-0 in the regular season last year, opened 2020 with a 35-8 rout of Zumbrota-Mazeppa behind junior Alex Wood’s 209 rushing yards and three TDs.
