Wayzata vs.

St. Michael-Albertville

5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15

Wide left. That’s how the opening game of a postponed-then-revived season ended for defending Class 6A champion Wayzata — the missed field goal coming with 6.3 seconds remaining last Friday. It was only fitting that the Trojans’ 29-28 loss to Prior Lake was loaded with drama, given the fits and starts, controversy and potential court battles that have accompanied a shortened season that started late because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The schedule doesn’t let up for Wayzata, which now prepares for a Thursday matchup against Week 1 winner St. Michael-Albertville, ranked No. 6 in the Star Tribune's metro preseason top 10.

The No. 3 Trojans (0-1, 0-1) certainly didn’t embarrass themselves in their opener last Friday. Junior quarterback Ryan Harvey threw three touchdown passes against the No. 8 Lakers, with wide receiver Julian Diedrich catching all three TD throws.

St. Michael-Albertville (1-0, 1-0) got a standout performance from its quarterback, too, as first-year starter Jack Drobinski threw for 112 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions as he guided the Knights past No. 10 Shakopee 29-26 on Oct. 9. Running back David Collins had a 41-yard touchdown among his 144 rushing yards for the Knights.
