Edina vs. Eden Prairie

7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 17

Having won its past four games, Edina is one of Class 6A's hottest teams and now sits in position to upend another streaking team: Eden Prairie, which has won its last five contests to remain in control of the Metro West subdistrict. Can the Hornets put an end to the surging Eagles and gain momentum going into the playoffs? We'll find out in our Top Game of the Week.

The odds may be stacked against the Hornets (6-1, 2-1), who enter the contest at No. 4 in the Associated Press Class 6A rankings from Oct. 10. Eden Prairie (6-1, 3-0) hasn't lost a league or district game since 2012 and has won five in a row against the Hornets — dating back to a 17-6 loss in Week 7 of 2012.

The teams will pit their strengths against each other in Wednesday's showdown.

The Edina defense has allowed no more than one touchdown in four of seven games this season and has surrendered just 10.9 points per game.

The Hornets, however, also boast one of the top running backs in the state in senior Matt Cavanagh, who has rushed for a team-high 871 yards and six touchdowns this season. The Harvard commit also plays linebacker and has compiled 47 tackles, a team-high two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

After recording just two touchdowns in the first two weeks, the No. 3-6A Eagles have bounced back to average 31.8 points in their last five games.

The Eden Prairie offense is led by senior quarterback Cole Kramer, a University of Minnesota commit who has thrown for 1,178 yards and seven touchdowns. Senior running back Nic Krueger (388 yards, 3 TDs) and senior wideout Daejon Wolfe (384 yards, 1 TD) supplement the Eagles' offensive attack.
