Eden Prairie vs. Wayzata

7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21

Eden Prairie and Wayzata managed to bounce back from Week 2 losses last Friday. The No. 6-6A ranked Eagles, after falling 14-0 to Lakeville North, soared to a 35-12 win over No. 4-6A Prior Lake while the No. 10-6A Trojans shut out Edina 23-0 a week after suffering a 27-24 loss to Minnetonka.

Now the Metro West subdistrict foes will meet in a key league matchup as Wayzata (2-1, 1-1) found its way back to .500 in the league standings, and Eden Prairie (2-1, 0-0) will be playing its opener.

Offense was an issue for the Eagles in the first two weeks of the season — they scored just 14 points in the opening contests — but Eden Prairie exploded for 35 points last week. Senior quarterback Cole Kramer, a University of Minnesota commit, threw a pair of touchdowns against Prior Lake while three running backs managed to find the end zone.

Despite last week’s outburst, the Eagles’ defense remains the team’s greatest strength so far. It has surrendered just 35 points in three weeks and gave up just 148 yards of total offense in the shutout loss to No. 2-6A Lakeville North.

The Trojans, who have scored at least 21 points in each game this season, will need to crack that Eden Prairie defense. Senior quarterback Keaton Heide, a South Dakota State recruit, threw for two touchdowns last week and has logged a score in each game this year. He has been able to spread the productivity, connecting with four different receivers for touchdowns.
