Indoors or out, in climate-controlled conditions or facing bitter windchill, nothing seems to affect the Nevis football team.

The Tigers showed what they can do when the weather is of no concern, rolling up 525 yards of total offense en route to a 44-16 victory over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in the Nine-Man semifinals Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“We played on a mud field in the section semifinals, we eked out a win against Norman County East in the Fargodome and then last week, we were at Bemidji St. and it was about a zero-degree windchill,” Nevis coach Shawn Klimek said. “Whatever we’ve had, these guys have stepped up.”

The Tigers roared from the outset, scoring on their first five drives, all covering more than 50 yards. Nevis led 32-0 late in the second quarter before the Knights scored a touchdown just before halftime. The Tigers had 348 yards of offense before the intermission.

“Today, I felt like everything was working for us,” Nevis quarterback Jack DeWulf said. “We were able to run the ball up the gut, run the sweep and then our pass plays were there, too.”

DeWulf led the team in rushing with 223 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. He added 136 yards and a touchdown passing.

When Russell-Tyler-Ruthton tried to come back, the Nevis defense stood firm. The Tigers intercepted four passes, none bigger than Zach Henry’s second of the game after the Knights had cut the lead to 32-16. The Knights never threatened after that.

“I knew we had to get the momentum back,” Henry said. “And we punched it in that time and the next time after that.”
