Mike Stern

Mike Stern laughed when asked if he’d ever scored six touchdowns in a game.

“No,” he said. “I have not.”

The senior rushed 22 times for 240 yards and the six scores as St. Croix Academy defeated Rochester Lourdes 61-29 on Saturday in the Class 3A quarterfinals at Prior Lake.

“He’s something else, isn’t he?” Crusaders coach Carl Lemke said. “He’s been a strong workhorse for us for the last two years.”

Stern scored on rushes of 3, 29, 4, 8 and 26 yards in the first three quarters, and added a 72-yarder to start the fourth quarter.

Matthew Sieh added a fumble recovery for a touchdown for the Crusaders (11-0), who avenged a loss to the Eagles in last year’s state title game. Nehemiah Hammick also scored.

Lemke said it was a relief to defeat the Eagles, his team’s first victory against them in three tries. “They’re such a good football team,” he said. “Even with the younger team they have this year, they played us tough.”

Matthew Hayford, Jimmy Fritzjunker and Zach Jungels scored for Rochester Lourdes (9-3), which has won three titles since 2010.

“I thought actually for the most part we did a pretty good job on (Stern), except for in the second half,” Eagles coach Mike Kesler said. “He’s special player, no doubt about it.”
