First report

It seemed the scoring would never stop Friday at Mounds View, where Elk River and Andover combined to score 70 points just in the second quarter.

By the time it ended, it was Elk River’s Sherrod Kpahn with what proved to be the final score in a 66-60 victory when he ran in from 15 yards out with 6:12 left in the game to put the Elks up 66-60. The two-point pass was batted down at the line.

Andover worked the ball deep in Elk River territory with tike running down, but a fourth-and-10 pass from Conner Knoepfle to Brandon Deitz was a half yard short when Collin Nelson dragged him down near the sideline just short of the first down marker.

Knoepfle and Andy Groaner connected for three touchdowns in the first half. Knoepfle led an 11-play drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Beberg with 22 seconds left in the third quarter to put Andover up 60-52.

The next drive, Elk River quarterback Mitchell Stroh attempted his first pass of the night — a 50-yard touchdown pass to Sherrod Kpahn, who then pounded in the two-point conversion to tie the game.

Knoepfle completed 17 of 19 passes for 252 yards and five touchdowns in the first half. He finished with seven touchdowns.

For Elk River, Jon Suchy rushed five times in the first half for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He added another on the first play of the second half.

After Elk River took a 14-6 lead when Stroh kept the ball on the option for a 45-yard touchdown run with 2:24 left in the first quarter, the Elks never led until Khan’s late touchdown.
