Rogers yielded 380 rushing yards in last year’s 49-7 drubbing at the hands of rival power Elk River.

On Friday, the Royals contained the Elks’ rushing game in a 24-20 upset victory.

John Torresani scored two touchdowns and Eli Solberg added a third for the Royals (4-2), who ended the 18-game winning streak of the Class 5A, No. 1 Elks (5-1), the defending state champions.

“Our line stepped up big tonight,” quarterback Cole Larson said. “Offense, defense, special teams, we played hard.”

Rogers took the lead with first-quarter touchdown passes from Larson to Torresani and Solberg. Torresani scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, after Elk River had taken a brief lead. Rogers’ defense held the Elks scoreless on their three final possessions.

“Their offense just forces you to be disciplined,” Rogers coach Marc Franz said. “I couldn’t be prouder of how our kids executed their assignments.”

Elk River’s loss ended the second-longest active winning streak in Minnesota high school football, which had included last year’s 13-0 season. The state leader is Caledonia with 34 victories.

“Obviously it means we did something pretty special last year,” coach Steve Hamilton said. “This group still has a chance. We just have to get better.”

Mitch Stroh threw touchdown passes to Sherrod Kpahn and Cory Hughes and Adam Nelson rushed for a score for the Elks.
