Key of the game: Johnson was a playmaker for the Polars, both with his legs and arm. He broke off a 70-yard rushing touchdown late in the first quarter. Just over one minute later, Johnson connected for a 74-yard touchdown pass to Dempley. Johnson capped the first half with an 18-yard touchdown run as the clock hit zero.

Quote: “I remember playing my first game with these guys three or four years ago here. It just means a lot for all of us to stick together.” — Johnson on the Polars’ senior class, which played its last home game Tuesday

One thing to know: Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa finished the season with a .500 record (5-5). The Jaguars had to travel more than 100 miles to Minneapolis for the game. BBE’s lone touchdown was a 33-yard pass from Ryan Illies to Sidney Shacter in the second quarter.

First report

It was pretty evident which player on the field Tuesday between Minneapolis North and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa is a Division I recruit.

Minneapolis North quarterback Tyler Johnson accounted for six touchdowns – three rushing, three passing – as the Polars routed the Jaguars 48-10 in the Class 1A, Section 4 semifinal. North remains undefeated and advances to the section finals Saturday at St. John’s University in Collegeville.

Johnson was responsible for three touchdowns in the first quarter alone. He opened the scoring with a 2-yard rushing touchdown and followed it up with a 70-yard score later in the quarter. Johnson completed the first of his three touchdown passes on a 74-yard strike to Patrick Dempley late in the first.

North scored early in the second quarter on a pass from Johnson to Dallas Griffin to make it a 28-0 lead.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa got on the board after a Polars fumble in the second quarter. Jaguars quarterback Ryan Illies found Sidney Shacter for a 33-yard touchdown.

Johnson scored again just before halftime with an 18-yard scamper that gave North a 34-7 lead. His sixth touchdown came early in the third quarter as he hit Malik Matthews for 56 yards. Johnson, who committed to play at the University of Minnesota earlier this month, eventually gave way to backup quarterback Azerick Rodgers.
