Game at a glance

Recap: Trailing 7-0 and his offense sputtering, Lakeville South coach Larry Thompson resorted to a fake punt early in the third quarter. It worked to perfection as up back Brett Fatturi ran for a 47-yard touchdown. The play sparked a 15-point half for the Cougars (5-4), who a few minutes before had lost quarterback Will Heller to an injury. Joey Paradise kicked a 35-yard field goal to give Lakeville South a 9-7 lead. Blaine answered to retake the lead later in the quarter with a 34-yard scoring pass from quarterback Griffin Fussy to Josh Wou Browne. But in the fourth quarter, Lakeville South backup quarterback Cole Engstrom rushed for a 3-yard score with 3:25 left. Defensive back Blake Wacholz had two interceptions, including one with 17 seconds left. The Cougars rushed for 184 yards on 40 carries. The defense played maybe its best game of the season, Thompson said.

Key of the game: The fake punt. The Cougars hadn’t reached the red zone until that point.

Quote: “We’ve been practicing it all year, and a lot of teams in our conference know it, but they didn’t.” — Thompson on the fake punt, the team’s first in about two years

One thing to know: Blaine’s Fussy also rushed for a 14-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
