Spring Lake Park capped last season with its first state tournament appearance since 2011, and the Panthers hope the success can propel the program forward. Spring Lake Park advanced to the Class 5A semifinals, where it lost to eventual state runner-up Simley 21-14, and posted an 8-4 overall record.

The Panthers open the year at Chaska against at team that put together a respectable 7-3 overall record last year. The Hawks, however, are only two years removed from a season in which they went 11-1 and reached the Class 5A state tournament semifinals (losing to Brainerd 20-19).
