Game at a glance

Game recap: Mistake-free football and big plays by Brett Johnson and Jordan Berrios helped Watertown-Mayer edge Jordan Friday in a Minnesota River Conference game. The 15-point margin of victory gave the Royals at least a share of the conference championship for a second-consecutive season.

Berrios, a senior running back, rushed 17 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson, a senior quarterback, scored twice on the ground for the Royals.

“We pride ourselves on preperation,” Berrios said. “We work hard.”

Mayer-Lutheran can clinch sole possession of conference crown with a victory at home over Belle Plaine next week.

Key of the game: With Watertown-Mayer leading 28-20 and 9:48 left in the game, Bryce Kallenbach recovered a Jordan fumble at midfield, preserving the Royals’ lead and setting up their final touchdown. “That was a huge momentum changer,” Johnson said. “We knew when we got the ball there we were going to score.”

Quote: “We knew Jordan was going to be tough on us. We had our eyes on the conference championship and all the guys did a great job.” --- Watertown-Mayer quarterback Brett Johnson

One thing to know: Jordan senior running back Andrew Fogerty had 30 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hubmen. Fogerty, who also returns kicks and is a key player on defense, set Jordan’s single-season rushing record this year. He’s a state champion wrestler headed to North Dakota State University.

“Our defense was the difference,” Berrios said. “Fogerty is a really good player. We overcame as a team as a defense.”
